Connected but Please Check Your Internet Connection and Try Again

  1. AC Question's Avatar

I get this gray rectangle box reading "Please check your internet connection and try again." It comes randomly and it appears at the bottom of my screen. I have tried clearing cache and restarting my phone. It doesn't matter if I'm on wifi or not. I am using a Nexus 6P on Verizon. I have a screenshot of it as well.

Does this happen with wifi switched on? If so, try resetting the router.

It happens whether I'm on Wifi or not. And LynLue, are you also using a 6P on Verizon?

It happens both on and off at work and home. Nexus 6(not P) on Tmobile.

Looks like it has quit doing it. I'm not sure what made it stop all of a sudden. After it started doing it I cleared the cache and turned it off and it didn't fix it. It stopped though, so I'm not complaining.

This just started happening to me on my Sprint S6. Customer service has been no help. It happens on Wi Fi and 4G

This same thing just started to happen to me on my Nexus 6p. I was getting that message, and I also wasn't able to receive calls (though I could make outgoing calls). I opened up the SIM card tray, and then re-inserted it, and all was well. Maybe there was some dust on it? Maybe it had gotten out of alignment? Anyway, that fixed the issue.

I've seen that with Google Now even when I have a WiFI connection and other apps work. I suspect the problem is at Google's end.

Same thing here with my Nexus 6p on Verizon. Anyone using Dropsync? I wonder if that might be related. I use Dropsync to sync a folder full of SNES roms and save state files. The pop-up seems more frequent when I am playing a game in the emulator and updating the save state files.

Same issue here on a Nexus 6P AND a Nexus 5X on Project Fi. Get the message both on WiFi and cellular. Have not been able to correlate it with any app. Formatting cache has no effect. Will try the SIM card trick.

suppose it is some nefarious government activity spying on our phones?
wouldn't put it past them. Happens to me a lot as well, but when I look at the LTE indicator, all bars are there as well as "LTE". WTF?

    lol... that's the only explanation!!
There isn't any "actual" connection problem... I even watch Netflix on my phone without any interruption other than that freaking grey box keep popping up on my screen and then on my nerve!

Here is how I solved it. The gray box that pops up is called a "toast." Go to the App Store and download an app called "Toaster." When you turn it on, it will make a log entry every time a toast pops up. When the offending toast appears, open Toaster and it will tell you which app initiated it. In my case, a VR app from NYTimes was causing the phantom message.

The app is amazing!! I didn't even know what those boxes are called!
Ironically ever since I installed the app, that specific box hasn't appeared 🤔
Anyway, thank you so much 👍

Thanks so much, blueskiesnh2o. I've been dealing with this forever and didn't know how to figure it out. Tried Toaster and sure enough it was the NYC VR app causing the message for me as well. Guess I'll just uninstall it. Problem solved. Thanks again.

Hmm. That's weird. When I click on the link at the top of the page, it takes me to the app in the Play Store. Maybe because I already have the app on my phone.
